Bulgaria suspended international treaty ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement), Economy Minister Traicho Traikov said in a news conference Tuesday in Sofia. Traicho Traikov said he would submit a draft decision to suspend the participation of Bulgaria in agreement.
Bulgarian Minister said the Government will vote on the motion to suspend the ACTA treaty at the next meeting of Cabinet on 15 February. Journalists asked him if Traikov and Bulgaria will retire from ACTA, and he said that a decision in this regard will be taken once the EU will reach a consensus on this issue.
In late January, a total of 22 EU countries, including Romania, signed ACTA, but that will not enter into force without the approval of Parliament. Treaty will be voted in June of MEPs.
Purpose of the agreement (between the EU, U.S., Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland) is to strengthen intellectual property rights, including online, and combating counterfeiting and piracy on the Internet.
Bulgaria is the third Eastern European state ratifying announcing the suspension of ACTA, after Poland and the Czech Republic, who did the same thing last week.
